Pokemon Basics |
Types: There are 18 types in Pokemon and they all interact with one another similar to rock-paper-scissors. This is an important aspect to battling and defeating the opponent. Knowledge of the type advantages and disadvantages can cost you the match. For example, Fire attacks do double damage to Grass types, but Water attacks do half damage to Grass types. There are also immunities where Pokemon do not take damage from certain attacks (Flying types are immune to Ground moves). The multipliers for super effective and not very effective attacks make a huge difference during battles and can completely change the game and a coach's strategy. This also plays a large role in building a team for a match. I have attached a link below of the type chart and additional info on types:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Type Moves: There are two different types of moves: damaging and non-damaging. Among damaging moves there are physical and special attacks. Physical moves deal damage to the opponent based on the Attack stat and move's power, and the opponent's Defense and HP stats. Special attacks deal damage to the opponent based on the Special Attack stat and the move's power, and their Special Defense and HP stats. Non-damaging moves are used for many different things, from status conditions like poison and paralysis to stat buffs/debuffs. See the following page on Bulbapedia for more detailed information:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Move Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB): STAB is essentially a bonus in power to a move when certain Pokemon use it. A Pokemon of a type who uses attacks of the same type get a 50% bonus in its power when using it. This is important to consider when choosing move-sets for Pokemon when team building for a match.
Ex: Charizard is a Fire/Flying type Pokemon. If it uses Flamethrower or Fly, then it gets a 50% bonus to that move's power for being the same type as that move. Abilities: Every Pokemon has an ability provides them with various advantages. Many Pokemon have 2-3 different abilities that they have access to, but can only ever have one ability at a time. This is an important aspect to consider when deciding to use a Pokemon (especially if you want to draft it!).
Held-Items: Items play a significant role in the performance of Pokemon in battles. They can make your Pokemon faster, stronger, recover HP, and so on. They can even cause Mega-evolution! It is strongly reccomended to draft a Pokemon who can mega evolve.

Stats: Stats say a lot about whether a Pokemon is a viable choice for battle, but that's not to say low base stat Pokemon cannot be used effectively. There are six different stats that every Pokemon has:
**Make sure to take advantage of a Pokemon's strongest stats and use the right types of moves to properly use their stats. This is a strong recommendation, but not always needed for matches. Ex: Earthquake is a strong physical attack, and Garchomp and Dragonite (who have high Attack stats) can do lots of damage with it.** Natures: Every Pokemon has a nature that can increase and decrease individual stats, which can make the difference in winning games.
